Laura-Jade Klée's curation and reflections @LauraJadeKlee
Last September Sidelong invited overground dwellers to explore the myths and mysteries of Nottingham caves in an unusual subterranean art walk, A Walk Through the Underworld. The walks rediscovered hidden underground spaces through small scale artworks, installations, storytelling and performances. The project blurred the line between fact and fiction and encouraged participants to embellish a new set of intriguing myths.
For 1 day only, Sidelong will allow these tales to surface at an exhibition at New Art Exchange. Presented within an atmospheric exhibition space evocative of a cave, Underworld features a short video of extracts from A Walk Through the Underworld, sound recordings of cave legends, photographs of fabricated cave relics, and unique artworks inspired by Nottingham’s cave environments.
Underworld also marks the launch of Sidelong’s publication A Box of Things. These limited edition boxes explore the project A Walk Through the Underworld and contain an assortment of handmade paper publications and small-scale ‘relic’ objects. The box includes two pamphlets of new writing by Wayne Burrows, entitled The Peel Street Codex and The Disappearances. Presented as collections of snippets of information, the writing evokes mysteries from the caves; strange stories unfold as the reader pieces together the puzzles.
Sidelong is an art collaboration between Jo Dacombe and Laura-Jade Klée, committed to exploring the undiscovered or unnoticed in the everyday. For more information about the project, please see sidelonguk.blogspot.com.
A Walk Through the Underworld is supported by Arts Council England and through New Art Exchange’s ExperiMentor programme for artists.
